Who is Bec Thomas?

Bec Thomas, born and raised in Glenorchy, Tasmania, grew up in a working-class family in Lutana and later moved to West Moonah. From a young age, she learned the value of community and hard work.

Educated at Bowen Rd Primary School and Ogilvie High, Bec was actively involved in leadership roles in school, sports, and her community. She worked her first job at a local supermarket at age 14 and continued to work through her university years.

Professional and Political Career:

Bec Thomas has a robust background in public service, holding roles across all three levels of government. She graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology, followed by First Class Honours in Sociology.

Her career has spanned various departments, including the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Health. Notably, she served as an adviser to the Hon.

Sue Hickey MP before being elected Mayor of Glenorchy. Under her leadership, Glenorchy has been referred to as the 'turnaround council', improving in community engagement and financial sustainability.

Local Government Experience:

Bec was first elected as a Glenorchy City Council Alderman in January 2018, became Deputy Mayor in 2020, and was elected Mayor in a 2021 by-election. During her tenure, she has focused on community safety, capital projects, and financial responsibility.

Her administration has been marked by significant community engagement initiatives and a concerted effort to return the council to financial health.

Community Involvement:

Bec is deeply involved in her community, contributing to various charitable and civic activities. She helped raise significant funds for the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal and has been actively involved in enhancing local infrastructure and safety measures.

Additionally, she founded her own consultancy, Rising Kind, to promote mental health and kindness, delivering numerous training courses since 2018.

Political Platform:

As an independent candidate for the Legislative Council, Bec promises a level-headed and collaborative approach to governance.

Advocating for a permanent BreastScreen Tasmania service in Glenorchy.

Crime Prevention:

Supporting early intervention programs and additional police resources.

Pushing for faster implementation of transport solutions in Greater Hobart.

Advocating for improved sport and recreation facilities, including the development of a stadium and entertainment precinct.
